Know your nails!/ Cunoaste-ti unghiile!

This is the first post in the "Nail care" category. Hope it will be useful ;)
Before starting doing your manicure it is very important to know a few things on the nail's anatomy.
I always advice not cutting your "cuticles" because they protect the matrix (root) of the nail against germs and bacteria. But thanks to LadyNailz I found out some more interesting stuff on this subject. >This may be a little shocking to you as it was to me when I found out.

Here are some photos representing the nail and its component parts.

As you can see, our whole life was a lie. The thing we call "cuticle" is in fact the eponychium and the true cuticle is the dead skin from underneath the eponychium that becomes visible as the nail grows. This is the cuticle that must be removed during manicure, NOT the eponychium.

With that cleared out of the way, here are the parts of the nail, their description and what they are there for.
1. a) The nail bed is the tissue located beneath the nail. It has a pinkish colour because it is highly vascularised. If its colour is rather blueish it means your peripheral circulation might not be so good. Also, if you are a smoker your nail bed will tend to have a yellow tint because of the substances your blood contains.

2. a) The matrix is the root of the nail and it is hidden beneath the skin, under the eponychium. The matrix is the most important part of the nail. Damage to it can result in damage to the appearance of the nail. The matrix produces the keratin cells that make up the nail and determines its shape and thickness.

3. a) The eponychium, perionychium and hyponichium are the edges of the nail folds.Their function is to "seal" the nail and like I said at the beginning of this post, protect it against all sorts of "external threats" (germs or bacteria that could cause nail infections).

4. a) The cuticle refers to the dead skin cells shed by the nail folds. These are attached to the nail plate and they stretch over it as the nail grows. They need to be removed regularly to prevent a build up.

5. a) The nail fold is simply the skin surrounding the nail.

6. a) The lunula is the front edge of the matrix.

7. a) The nail plate is the nail itself. The part that is outside of the nail bed is called the free edge. The nail is dead tissue. That's why it doesn't hurt when it is cut. The nail DOES NOT breathe. Only the matrix breathes and it takes its oxygen from the blood that reaches the end of our fingers. There is no need to take a break from nail polish. Anything we put on our nails (nail polish, gel, acrylic, gel polish) will keep them moisturised by not letting water evaporate. Keep in mind to always use a basecoat to prevent nails from staining.

I cannot stress enough how important is to not hurt your eponychium. It is live skin and it protects the matrix. Damage to the matrix can mean temporary or even permanent damage to the appearance of the nail. This means it might grow in a weird shape, get accentuated ridges or unsightly discolourations. The white spots we sometimes see don't mean we have a vitamin/calcium deficiency nor they are calcium deposits, they simply reflect a minor damage to the matrix - don't try to remove them, they will grow out eventually. Also, cutting your eponychium will have long term aesthetic consequences - it will become so hard and rough you will have to use a pedicure cutter in order to remove it! Moisturise your hands daily and you will see your fingers and nails will look so good you'll never feel the need of cutting anything again. Never let nail technicians or manicurists cut your eponychium. The true cuticle, on the other hand must be removed thoroughly because if you don't it will make your polish chip faster and in the case of acrylic or gel nails it will cause lifting.
Also, do not cut your nails extremely short. Cutting the hyponichium (or chewing on it in case of nail bitters) will shorten your nail bed in time.

Taierea hyponichium-ului (sau rontairea lui in cazul celor care isi rod unghiile) va cauza in timp scurtarea patului unghiei.

I'm done with the anatomy class. Hope you found out some interesting and useful things :)
